suite for unaccompanied solo flute
duration c. 00:12:00
i. ballade – “acedia”
ii. toccata – “asphyxiation”
iii. passacaglia – “alter(c)ation”
iv. air – “arcadia”
Program Note:
Although each movement of ascension is based on a traditional form, the compositional style becomes increasingly less conservative as the suite goes on. Meter and tonality are abandoned for extended techniques and temporal freedom. This evolution serves to illustrate the program that can also be gleaned from the alternate titles for each movement: an escape from the cyclical self-destruction of past-dwelling to the mystical release of the eternal future.
